A new way to think about creativity

Watch this video with Elizabeth Gilbert talking about creativity and tell me what you think.

  1. This video is truly inspirational, and it puts a totally different perspective into consideration. i personally think that most artists are undergoing extreme stress and depression, is partly due to the high expectations that people place on them. hence, they would no doubt be stressed at trying to meet the impossible target.
in addition, i think that what she has just said, is actually a way of managing psychological stress and relieving it. after all, the way the human mind works is sometimes truly incomprehensible and amazing

  3. I think the reason people become upset, frantic and worried when they cannot come up with something better than before, is because of our mindset.

It could be deal to our education and society that mold our minds, such that we believe we have to create something better, so that others will not criticize us or talk about how the previous works were better.

Because of this mindset, that builds up over time, humans became more and more conscious of how people view ourselves.

So much so that, the pressure we faced eventually becomes overwhelming, leading to funny thoughts( ending your own life).

To me, Elizabeth Gilbert's way of reliving her pressure, is to share her responsibility with something else. She changed her mindset of responsibility coming from only herself so that she can lighten her burden.

To me, you don't necessarily have to 'talk' to something, you can find many others ways to change your mindset, so that you don't have to constantly fear criticisms from outside.

To sum it up, i believe that if we have the correct mindset on our work, we can go on and on without feeling too much pressure.

  4. Angie, what are some characteristics of a person with a 'correct mindset'? Give me some examples to illustrate.

  5. I did not know that the subject on " creativity " can be made to sound so complicated. I think that we should not have too much expectations on authors and artistes. They are still humans beings after all. She mentions about some good ways to manage one's emotioms and stress. Her speech is indeed inspirating and i am sure she is not the only author that is facing those problems. Let's hope that more people can know these problems that authors face and make the authors feel better about their job by giving them recognition for their hard work and do not expect too much from them.
