Go to my homepage at  http://www.netvibes.com/lucyhow#News

Browse through any of your preferred online newspaper and share your views on any of the event reported that interest you.

Here is how you can write a review of the event:

  1. Start your article with a short summary (two to three sentences) of the highlights of the event.
  2. Then continue with the significance of the event.  In other word, why did you choose to discuss this event?  Is it significant to you personally?  Does it have an impact on your family or the community (school, religious, national, global)
  3. What is your stand with regard to the event?  What other information do you have to support your stand?

Remember to post the link to the article.

  1. The event that I wanted to review is the announcement of a meeting between USA and Russia which might lead to a reduction in the amount of nuclear warheads that both countries have in their weapons arsenal. In this event, president Obama of the USA intend to sign a treaty with Russia in time to replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or Start, which would expire in December of 2009.The United States' aim for signing this proposed treaty is to show the international community that the USA is still willing to be committed to the disarmament efforts despite the recent plan to increase the amount of troops that it has in Afghanistan.

The talk is a very significant event as it shows that relations between the USA and Russia could still improve despite both countries' recent dispute about Russia's war with Georgia. This event is also significant because the disarmament process would also means that the world might soon turn into a more peaceful place, with the chances of a nuclear war between countries being largely reduced as a result of lesser nuclear warheads, even though the threat of terrorism and other things still exist. This talk could mean that other countries could now also join the disarmamnet process, since the USA could still disarm even when it needs troops badly for its commitments in Afghanistan.

I believe that the USA and Russia should reach a conclusion on the nuclear warhead reduction talks as soon as possible, especially since tensions are still rather high between the USA and Russia especially when Georgia is being mentioned. This would help to prevent both countries from being too hostile to each other since they are already in a talk to reduce their weapons. If the talk is successful, then this might mean that both countries could then proceed on to co-operate in other areas, such as the economies in both countries,in an attempt to recover from the current world recession faster. This is because both countries are key players in the world economy, and also since Russia is the world's largest producer of natural gas, a deal could be struck to make the price of natural gas lower,so as to encourage the production of many goods in other countries and in Russia to boost the world economy.

In conclusion, the outcome of the proposed talk between Russia and the USA is essentially important because not just could tensions be reduced between both countries,it could also lead to the prospect of increasing cooperation between both countries, which might also indirectly help the international community to recover from the current world recession.

  3. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20090506/twl-oukwd-uk-flu-bd5ae06.html

This event is that the new swine flu has now killed another person in the States.

Why is this so significant? At first sight, this may not seem significant at all. After all, the woman had chronic health problems; her resistance was severly weakened and as a result, she died. Right? Wrong.

A second death could mean many things. Especially in the US, where it is a developed country, and healthcare is easily avalible, and also, where a better understanding of the virus is established.

This death could mean 1. mutation. This is clearly evidenced by the name "swine flu". Originally a pig diease, the flu mutated and evolved to be able to spread from animals to humans, and from then on, human to humans. Could it then be like the HIV virus, rapidly mutating itself to be deadly, contagious, and above all, resistant to drugs? Yes, it could. It is a possiblity, and no matter how low, it is still a possiblity.

Secondly, Singapore monitors itself based on global levels. Currently, Singapore is already at the orange level. Should more deaths happen, a Red pandemic level would be declared. This would mean that schools would be shut down, public transit would have later intervals, or in its worse case scenario, a total halt in public transit. Traffic jams with 3 times the amount of Taxis on the PIE during peak hours will no doubt cause a significant damage to the Singaporean economy.

In conclusion, the second death was an important one as in brings about many possible implications. barry 0924

  4. The event that I am going to write a review is Influenza A (H1N1) commonly known as swine flu. The outbreak was first detected in Mexico City. Swine flu is infectious in the 24 hours before any symptoms show in a victim. Thus, Swine flu victim could be transmitting the virus the day before he falls ill and could infect more people since the signs of infection are not visible.

This is very significance as swine flu was thought to be very deadly and contagious like SARS. Also, the swine flu affected the whole world. Due to the previous encounter with SARS which has taken away many lives, the whole world is taking this very seriously. Many countries have taken the necessary precaution to prevent tragedy from happening again. For example, in the schools of Singapore, there is a temperature taking exercise conducted twice a day. From the large demand for thermometer which led to a shortage for it, we could also see the seriousness of this outbreak of disease.

I think that all the precaution done by our government is all necessary and it is not time consuming as it helps to prevent people from contracting the disease. I feel that the world is very well-prepared for the current crisis and also sense the seriousness of everyone in facing the disease.

  6. The event I have chosen is the efforts to find new vaccine for swine flu. Since there is a worldwide risk of swine flu having great impact on our community, there is a need for vaccines against it. Here is an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at New York Medical College who is working on this.

This doctor runs a laboratory in Westchester County that is highly regarded for its skill at turning flu viruses into “seed stock” — a form of the virus that will grow rapidly in eggs so that drug companies can use it to make hundreds of millions of doses of vaccine.

Though federal health officials have not yet decided whether to call for a swine flu vaccine, they say it is important to be ready for quick production of millions of doses. Thus, researching on vaccines for the flu is essential for our well-being.This article tells about the method of finding any vaccine.

To top it all, there is really a need to research on vaccines for this pandemic disease. As we all know that Singapore in orange level, it will not take very long to reach Red level. Therefore, there has to be vaccine to build up our immunity against this influenza A(H1N1).

  7. According to a newspaper article, US recession is predicted to end
by the third quarter of this year. UOB economic report showed that
there are signs of revival of the US recession and that export
driven Asian countries are likely to have a imminent recovery.

The recent recession which started in the U.S.has also threatened
the global economy. Stocks had been plummeting and many companies
had cut jobs. Everyone has cut back on spendings and the world was
about to experience an economic slowdown. The recession does not
affect me directly but it has affected the economy of the world
on a whole. The loss of jobs to the people is a clear first effect.
As income is lost when the people are jobless, they tend to spend
less and save more. This will lead to a recession as the government
revenue is reduced with less expenditure by the people.

I feel that this is a very important event as the recession had
hit everyone very hard and a swift recovery was necessary.
The unemployment rate has increased significantly. As a result,
spendings have been reduced, resulting in a economic slowdown.
Without these spendings, the revenue for the government will also
decrease significantly. This will lead to a spread effect to other
countries which might indirectly be affected because of recession.
As US is a major economic country which traded with many various
countries. It is because of recession, the exports and imports of the
country is decreased. Other countries which depended mostly on exports
to Us will suffer more greatly, leading to a global recession.
The recovery would be much needed to boost the rock bottom economy.

According to other news articles recently, stock markets which
represents a country's economy had been bullish and had risen
significantly and this might be a sign of improvement as compared to
    the initial stages of recession.

  8. It is expected that the economy of Singapore is going to shrink by 10% this year, ending up as the worst performer in Asia. The main reason to why Singapore is badly hit is due to us, being the most open economies and that we specialise in manufacturing, which will be hit the hardest by the crisis.

This is significant as it affects the whole of
Singapore. If our economy would shrink by 10%, it will mean that lots of people will be jobless and will nto be able to feed themselves and their families. Not only that, the government will also have a greater difficulty trying t resolve the problem and especially events like the Youth Olympics is going to be held soon in 2010. A shrink in the economy by 10% will definately affect the budget allocated to this event, which is very significant as it is the first Youth olympics ever held. Poverty will also become a greater problem in Singapore as the ecnomy shrink and it will be hard for Singapore to get on track again with the world's economy.

Therefore, I feel that instead of panicking and being afraid of losing jobs or being unemplyed, we, as Singaporeans should all join hands and work together as one and overcome this crisis together. If we were to endure through all the way, the situation will definately turn better and we will be able to enjoy ecnomical growth once again.

  9. Swine flu seems to be a hot topic now, at least among our class. If you have just scanned through all the previous reviews on "Swine flu", you will definitely have to read this. Why? Because in San Francisco, Cyber crooks are capitalising on influenza fears with torrents of email promising "Swine flu" news but delivering malware or dubious offers for potency drugs or other weird products.

I choose to discuss this event as the spammed emails have already affected a significant number of people globally. When I flip through the papers these few days, readings on the deadly flu took up much of the pages. Every report is on the seriousness of humans on getting hit by the virus. This event, however, talks about the flu being more fatal to computer equipment rather than humans, and thus it attracted my attention.

The world today is exploded with information coming from almost everywhere. One will find that getting reliable resources is becoming a tough task nowadays, especially during critical times. Malware writers, spammers and scammers will use any high media event or high impact news story to push their wares including the sickness and misery of others. These guys have picked up on all the fears and confusions people have. With all the hysteria of swine flu, some people click on these emails. Email spam has long existed, and it is not that easy to eliminate it from the Internet. Personally, I think that the public should just try to stay vigilant, especially so during this time.

Thus, if you are looking for credible sources of information on the flu, just forget about your email, unless you are able to install Tamiflu or Relenza in your computer.

  10. The event that i am going to give a review is about the first U.S face transplant offering thanks. In year 2004,Connie Culp was shot by her husband. The blast shattered her nose, cheeks, the roof of her mouth and an eye. Hundreds of fragments of shotgun pellet and bone splinters were embedded in her face. She needed a tube into her windpipe to breathe. Only her upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin were left. Then, on Dec. 10, Doctor Maria Siemionow and a team of doctors replaced 80 percent of Connie Culp's face with bone, muscles, nerves, skin and blood vessels from another woman who had just died.

Connie Culp's stepping forward to show the rest of the world what she looks like now has brought everyone to a question. What is the purpose of having a face transplant? Critics say that face transplants are unnecessary, because they are risky procedures involving a lifetime of immunosuppressants, that do not save a person's life, but improve an individual's appearance. However, the fact that Connie Culp regained some of her basic functions highlights that "this is not cosmetic surgery in any sense of the word," said Dr. Eric Kodish, the professor and chairman of the Cleveland Clinic's Department of Bioethics.

Connie Culp said that "When somebody has a disfigurement and don't look as pretty as you do, don't judge them, because you never know what happened to them. Don't judge people who don't look the same as you do. Because you never know. One day it might be all taken away." Connie Culp's stepping forward make me feel that perhaps it is time for some of us to do some soul searching. Many people always give the disfigured, mentally or physically disabled people a different look and discrimate them. It is not themselves who wants to become the way they are now. They do not have a choose. We, who are 'normal', should offer them our help and not shun them, as though as they are some contagious disease. We are all human beings and should respect each other. Being disfigured or disabled does not mean being deprived of that right to be respected and be treated like normal.

  11. Sweden had confirmed the country's first case of the new flu, H1N1 flu. It was a woman who had just returned from United States. Those who the woman had been in close contact with had been receiving antiviral treatment.

This is significant as it showed that the flu can be spread to any countries. Also it serves as a precaution for Singapore to ensure that those who had returned from other countries especially countries like United States are not having the flu. Now even a few Asia countries have cases of this flu. This flu is very deadly as it killed lots of people in other countries which reminded us of SARS a few years back. Furthermore, schools in Singapore are taking preventive measures such as taking temperatures. There are even some schools ban the use of water cooler. All these prove how significant the flu is.

I think Singapore Government is doing a fine job in countering this crisis as so far there is no confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu in Singapore while many countries had been hit by this pandemic.Besides that, i think that people should try to avoid travelling overseas during this period of time.

  12. Title:Travel industry grapples with swine flu

This article is about how the travel industry have been hit negatively due to the eruption of swine flu. It also covers the implications of such situation.

I feel that this issue is significant because the decline of travel industry will affect the world's economy and countries' bilateral relations.
The decline will result in a fall in tourism. hence countries which are dependent on tourism for income will face additional economic problems prior to the financial crisis. It will be harder to recover from the financial crisis, social problems such as unemployment, poverty will continue to surge as government will have less revenue to help these people.

It has also became a pressing issue between Mexico and countries who impose visa requirements as bilateral ties are being threatened. Mexico feel that these countries are being over reacting and have prejudice on Mexicans. Therefore, even after the swine flu is over, the damage caused will retain and may affect future trade.

    3. My stand is that, we should not travel to epidemic areas for the time being. We should ensure minimal possibility of infection and hence by not traveling, we can decrease the chances of being infected.
In the news article itself, there have been cases whereby United States students travelled to epidemic areas and brought back the virus to United states causing a wider spread of flu.

therefore, i believe we should minimise the risk of contracting the flu by staying in Singapore, where there is no confirmed cases.

Even though, the economy and bilateral relations may be at stake but these issues compared to the swine flu outbreak is less pressing. Hence we should divert our attention on how to prevent the flu from entering Singapore for the time being.

  14. THE European Union Parliament voted in favour of a ban import of seal products to force Canada to end its annual seal hunt because of the size of the annual slaughter and the inhumane way of killing seals. However, the Canadian government reacted sharply to the move and will challenge the ban by bringing up the issue to the World Trade Organization if the new law does not exempt Canada.

This event is actually significant as it might lead to the end of the largest commercial seal hunting in the world which kills an average of 300,000 harp seals annually in Canada. The European Union is Canada’s second-largest trading partner, after the United States, and its second-largest source of foreign investment, therefore by eliminating such a key trade route and ending market for the seal products, it actually shows how the European Union is determined in upholding high standards of animal welfare and tackling the problem of animal cruelty. It will serve as a good example of protection of animal’s rights for the international community to learn from.

Personally, I support the action taken by the European Union. The fact that these animals are powerless to defend themselves should make it more important for humans to protect their rights instead of exploiting and taking advantages of them for personal gains which often inflict massive pain, distress and suffering on these poor animals. Beside the European Union, Russia and United States have already taken the step to ban seal products, but more public support still remain to be gained to make it an united effort in putting a stop to wildlife trade.

Tittle: WHO wants countries to justify H1N1 flu measures

    SUMMARY

The World Health Organization is asking countries who are taking extreme measures to combat the Influenza A (H1N1) flu, such as restricting international travel, to justify their actions. One example is china, which has quarantine Mexicans and suspends flights to and from Mexico has sparked a diplomatic uproar, with Mexico having to charter a private jet to Beijing to fly its stranded nationals home.

    Comments

I think that using such extreme measures to keep out the swine flu from their country is indeed quite inconsiderate and undiplomatic, as this would affect the various country and sectors that are involved. In addition, the WHO has reiterated that it advises no travel restrictions or border closures.

For one, by canceling and reducing international travel, china would cause the traveling industry to suffer a lost and tourism in the other countries would also be affect as well. This would amount to huge economic lost in various countries and some travel companies may not be able to make ends meet and might end up having to close down.
Secondly, by targeting only Mexico, imposing restrictions on flights flying to and from Mexico, china is indirectly implying that Mexico is a highly dangerous area. This would affect the people’s confidence in Mexico, and hence affecting the confidence of investors and tourists to visit the country, hence, affecting Mexico’s trade and economy, as well as its tourism industry. Furthermore, not only Mexico is affected by the swine flu, other country such as the United States of America is affected as well. Hence, china should not only target Mexico, as it would seem quite discriminative.
Though, I do acknowledge that this is one of the government’s efforts in trying to contain the virus and prevent its spread into their country. As the swine flu would cause a lot of panic and amount huge economic losses should it gain access into China.

The article also informs the public that the WHO is doing their job, in their quick response to the situation and meeting out various solutions and preventions to this outbreak of virus. For example, they are quick to react to decide whether to give the go ahead for the large-scale manufacturing of a vaccine against the influenza A (H1N1) virus. And in addition, they are also considerate of the poorer regions in various countries, as to whether does the country have enough resources to provide good health care and vaccines for the people there.

In conclusion, I think that the WHO is doing a very good job in coping with this sudden viral outbreak, and are quick and effective in meeting out solutions to stop the spread of the virus, and alleviate fear and panic into countries, addressing problems issued by various countries as well.

In this article, it states that Singapore has lowered the alert level from orange flags to yellow ones based on the 5-coloured flag alert system which starts from green to yellow, orange, red and lastly black when a severe pandemic has broken out. The article also state that Tamiflu and Relenza, 2 antiviral drugs has been found to be effective in combating against the H1N1 virus (swine flu).
The outbreak of H1N1 virus is significant to Singapore as like the SARS outbreak in 2003, the economy will fall which will affect every sector of the society. Besides, currently the economy has already been not doing well with the H1N1 virus spreading rapidly it would further deteriorate the economy even in which resulting in severe recession to take place. Singapore is a country heavily dependent on trade to survive. Although measures have been put in place, it is no doubt that it is unable to totally keep the economy at a standstill at the peak. Also, due to the fact where the Youth Olympics will be held in Singapore very soon,
Although the news has stated that WHO pandemic alert systems has progressed to 5, it only indicates only how much has the H1N1 viral spread to other countries, which hence explains the change in colour of Singapore’s alert system flags representing a improved situation. I feel that Singapore has done a really good job in controlling and dealing with this crisis so far. I believe that it is because of the SARS outbreak in 2003 where many of us has learnt lessons, as well as gained experience. This lessons, as well as experiences have allowed us to better prepare for another crisis which may appear in near future and this has been proven in the current H1N1 virus outbreak. However, to prevent the H1N1 virus from spreading to Singapore, not only the government has to do the job. We have to play a part in it too by practicing proper hygiene. As Singapore’s NE values have state, “We must ourselves defend Singapore.” Indeed, no one is responsible for our own future and well being, hence, we must ourselves protect ourselves against the H1N1, playing our part.

  17. Swine influenza (SI) is a virus disease that can cause epidemics of acute respiratory disease in pigs. Mexico has reported 822 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 29 deaths. The United States has reported 403 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.

The World Health Organization has declared the human swine influenza situation to be a public health event of international significance. This clearly indicates that Swine influenza has significant effects on all aspects of global communities regarding health incidents that have the potential for significant impact to our nation’s well-being. In order to prevent such disease, I believe there should be incessant efforts by both individuals and organizations.

It is important that people understand that there's a role for everyone to play when there's an outbreak going on. There are things that individuals do, families do, communities do to try and reduce the impact. At the individual level, understand how they can prevent respiratory infections. Very frequent hand-washing is something that we talk about time and time again and that is an effective way to reduce transmission of disease. This basic thing is the part of personal responsibility in trying to reduce the impact.

Furthermore, such environmental organizations can hold seminars in schools and firms to emphasize the importance of the individuals’ efforts to improve the surrounding environment in schools, classrooms, and offices.

In a nutshell, with these strategies and international efforts around this infectious disease, we could eventually alleviate the situation.

On 2 March 2009, a final-year Indonesian-Chinese engineering student, David Hartanto Widjaja at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) jumped from a campus block after stabbing a professor in his back on Monday morning. After stabbing the professor, the male student - who was in his 20s - slit his wrists and jumped off a five-storey building. We have chosen this event because this is the first incident in Singapore where a student had assaulted a professor. It is reported that he was under stress as his grades have been slipping, causing his scholarship to be terminated recently.

This incident is significant to the university as this has alerted them that a student's welfare is important and cannot be neglected. If neglected, the student's emotions and mindset will not be correct and this affects the student's grade and may even, claim a life like this example. The university had taken a step to improve the welfare of the students by getting counsellors to keep an eye on the students and by reviewing the pastoral care system to see how we can pick out better students who have such problems, even if they don't communicate with others.

To counter those students who had witness the awful and disturbing incident or shares a close relationship with the above mentioned, NTU has decided to give these students counselling. We are very supportive of this measure, as it highlights the fact that the university promotes a holistic education system, as they show that they are concern not only for the students’ academic results but also their mental health.

In conclusion, we feel that one person’s mental health is more important than anything else, including academic results. Imagine, one who scores straight As for his exams but is very pessimistic about life and things around him, do u think such a person will succeed in the society in the future? We highly doubt so. However, in today’s society, results, certificates are highly recognised. They determine one’s capability and stand in the working world. Without this one will be deemed as a failure in many aspects of life. Therefore, as students, we believe that we should always strike a balance between our academics and social life. Like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once quoted, “Perseverance is a great element of success. If you knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody." We should always bear in mind that we should never give up on ourselves no matter how gloomy times may be as there is always a way to everything.

  19. The article is about the pursuit for happiness in Bhutan. According to the article, government policies in Bhutan are made in relation to the amount of happiness they produced.
This event is significant because if the system receives green light in Bhutan, the big players in the world’s economy is considering taking the system of gross national happiness seriously. If the world is to focus its attention on becoming happier instead of just ways to earn more money, I believe that the world would become a better place to live in. there would be less greed, as what Prime Minister Jigme Thinley of Bhutan thinks has caused the current financial crisis. However, such a system would also carry some negative impacts. For example, if everyone is to be happy and contented with life, there would be no motivation to continue the tough journey of science and our state of technology would remain stagnant. Furthermore, despite having the numerous ways to measure happiness, I feel that happiness cannot be measured just by a set of mathematical formula. Life is not just simple math.
The news is significant to me because if the system were to be implemented, I will have to experience and adapt to this new style of living as soon as possible.
My stand on this matter is that I do not support it fully. I admit although without human common weakness of greed, the world would be a friendlier place to live in. however, if the entire world is to live in such a system, I do not think it would be practical. There is bound to be a higher emphasis of one of the indicators. As a result, companies that have worked so hard before the change in “ideology” would be at a great loss.

  22. Singapore lowered its flu alert level from orange to yellow. This shows that the situation of the H1N1 flu in Singapore is increasing. This is indeed very significant as Singaporeans will feel safer and less worried about the flu. However, 13 home quarantine orders were issued to travellers entering Singapore with a travel history to Mexico.

I personally feel that the quarantine policy is very good as it would effectively prevent the spreading of the H1N1 virus. People would also dare to go out as there will be no threat posing against them.

With the stepping down of alert status, temperature screening are relaxed, except for healthcare institutions. Students no longer have to take temperature in schools.

This made us more assured that we are safe from the threat of the virus. However, I think it is very important for to stay vigilant at all times, with or without the virus. This is because a new virus or crisis may appear anytime and we need to be prepared for this.

One good example is the lessons we learnt from the SARS incidents years back. During the outbreak of the H1N1 virus, we are able to respond fast enough to control the situation. This is because from the SARS incident, we have learnt that we need to take precaution, like temperature taking, to ensure that we are safe from the virus.

In conclusion, although Singapore is safe from the H1N1 virus for the time being, we should continue to stay vigilant and prepared. This is the only way to protect ourselves in face of any situation.

I support the stepping down of the flu alert level as Singapore has no confirmed case of H1N1 flu. If the alert level is not stepped down, poeple will get more and more worried about the situation. By stepping down the flu alert level, tourists will also have more confidence in visiting Singapore as they know we are safe.

in this article, it shows that a particular kindergarden still continues to use hand sterilize and to maintain good hygiene even though singapore's pandemic alert level has dropped back to yellow.

i feel that this is a very good learning point as the saying goes,"prevention is better than cure". hence it is always better to keep their hyginene level high by washing their hands often, instead waiting till the situation gets worst and affects singapore before we regret.

the pandemic level was reduced to yellow as they realised that many countries actually over estimated their number of casualties, therefore, making the pandemic sound alot more serious and drastic then it really is.

this may be a good and a bod thing though.

    why is it good?
this is because by making us think that the incident is more serious, we will then be more cautious to our surrounding and hygiene.also, we'll be taking more measures to reduce the possibility of the spread of swine flu, should it enter singapore, this includes the temperature taking in all schools and tertiaries.

instead, if the information is reported just as it is, and lowering the pandemic level, the measures taken will then be lessen and be more relaxed. the consequence will then be dire should swine flu suddenly hit singapore, and by raising the pandemic level and taking the necessary measures then will be far too late.

of course, by in doing so, it will have adverse effect on our tourism sector as tourist will be afraid to enter singapore.but on the bright side, won't that also be a good thing as it reduces the chances of them transmitting swine flu into singapore? I'm pretty certain the main concern now is to first ensure the safety of singaporeans regarding the swine flu instead of concerns of the tourism board, which will also inturn affect us economically.

  25. The article i would be sharing my views on is the explosion which took place in Marina Bay today in the afternoon.

Three racks carrying six cylinders of acetylene each, tumbled off a lorry and fell onto the road causing five cylinders, weighing about 50kg each to rupture resulting in the fire. The lorry belonged to logistics company UBTS, which had been contracted by gas firm Soxal to deliver the cylinders to a customer at the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort work site.

I feel that such an accident reflects badly on Singapore and that companies lack emphasis on safety nowadays. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the accident however, its impact could be felt by office workers working in the Central Business District. To substantiate my stand, just few months back in February, a fire broke out in Jalan Papan factory, a recycling factory in Jurong industrial estate. Such industrial accidents are getting more ubiquitous and thus, the government should do more on educating local companies.

The reason why I write about this is because this article is very interesting. Singapore is using a different strategy to reduce crime rate. This idea may serve well to reduce violent youth behavior.

I think it is a creative idea to do things in a not so rigid way. We are always concerned with how to educate children on not been so violent but they end up not listening because of their rebellious nature. Nowadays, violence is featured in many forms of mass media. Thus parents won’t have the time or the energy to prevent these materials reaching their children. Besides their children’s self awareness, they can also take fish oil which does not only act as supplement but also an anti-violence agent.

However, this idea may not be feasible because parents may end up feeding their children with fish oil until they are old enough. I think fighting or rather violence is part of growing up. We learn from what we do so that we won’t repeat it again. If we just use this kind of method to suppress violent, we are not curing the root of problem. Fish oil then becomes a drug to cure a ‘sickness’ which is more psychological than physical. Thus it will not work that fantastically.

When youth know what the purpose of these fish oil pills is, they may become even more frustrated, rebellious and violent. This means their parents do not trust them. Thus it may even negatively affect the situation, causing it to become worse.

China's Foreign Ministry on Thursday warned the Paris city council not to formally bestow honorary citizenship on the Dalai Lama, saying that would likely spark a renewal of furious anti-French sentiment among Chinese.

As a chinese i strongly disagree with paris city`s action as dalai lama is the one who created problems in Tibet!his action destroy social stability within Tibet and cause a great lost in Tibet as the riot that happen before not only money was lost but also human`s lifes. because dalai lama influence the people to against chinese government. so how can be the paris city to bestow honorary citizenship on the Dalai Lama?

During the festival market at Lau Pat Sat, many culinary and beverage workshops will be there teaching people to cook various types of dishes, in collaboration with the People's Association and Kopitiam Group.

I personally find this article quite intriguing as, if i were not so busy, would actually love to take a peek at what the workshops have to offer. Why? Because it is a skill we all should learn. As many of us know, there are some Singaporeans who have not touched a frying pan or wok in their life, especially those in the younger generation. We eat food every day. I think that no one wants to eat poor quality food, so instead of complaining that the Hokkien Mee from one stall does not give enough prawns, or that the Carrot Cake from another does not have much taste, why not make it to one's own liking. Maybe mix in some orange peels in Char Kway Teow, as long as one eats it, who cares.

I also think that cooking is a good skill to learn as it makes eating breakfast lunch and dinner cheaper. What might cost thirty dollars in a restaurant might only cost fifteen if one makes it oneself. Take chicken rice for example. A normal plate of chicken rice would cost about four dollars in a coffee shop. By simply buying a small chicken and some rice, fifteen dollars would be enough for one person to have chicken rice for breakfast lunch and dinner for maybe two or three days, with the amount of chicken that the coffee shop stalls usually give.

As for my stand, needless to say, I fully support Lau Pat Sat's decision on organising such an event. It provides Singaporeans an opportunity to regain what they have lost though generations, the knowledge of cooking.

On 1st April, Mas Selamat Kastari, the leader of Singapore's JI has been arrested in Malaysia after more than a year since his escape from Whitley Detention Centre. It was reported that he was arrested in the outskirts of Johor Bahru and is currently held by Malaysian authorities for interrogation.

This event is of high importance to Singapore as his escape threatens the security and safety of all Singaporeans. He was said to be the mastermind of several bombing plans on various location, including planning to hijack a airplane to crash into Changi Airport. Therefore, his arrest would mean a relief to all Singaporean's unsettling heart.

Although the arrest of Mas Selamat might seem like a reason for Singaporeans to rejoice, however JI members might be infuriated over the arrest of their leader and organise more terrorist attacks on Malaysia or even Singapore.

On April Fool's Day earlier this year, Mas Selamat Kastari, a prominent figurehead of the Singapore's Jemaah Islamiah terrorist organization, was arrested in Johor by the Malaysian authorities.

This capture is of great significance to countries in the region as his capture brings an end to the largest manhunt ever conducted in Singapore. If he remained as a fugitive, the safety and security of Singapore would continue to be threatened. Hence, his capture is a relief to the people in Singapore.

However, I do not understand why the Malaysians did not announce his capture until recently. It is highly significant that all law enforcement agencies share information with each other and not withhold sensitive information from each other just because of different political interests.

One week after the level of alert was changed to "Orange", a new information is revealed about the Influenza A (H1N1) virus. It was announced by the Singapore Health Minister, Khaw Boon Wan, that the virus is contagious, but not deadly. Although the virus may eventually reach Singapore, the minister said that there will not be a need for undue alarm, as scientists have confirmed that two antiviral drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, are proven to be still effective against the virus that had plagued Mexico.

Although the alert level has been lowered to the "Yellow", the minister stressed that there is still a need to stay vigilant and remain cautious as the threats posed by the virus are still relatively unknown.

I believe that all Singaporeans should still play their part and take responsibility of their own health. Precautionary measures like daily temperature taking are still essential and effective. Every Singaporeans should be responsible for their own health and should take appropriate steps when needed, such as to see the doctor whenever you are feeling ill. It is better to play it safe than taking risks just for convenience sake.

I would like to share my view on the recent news that Singapore is going to lower the flu alert.

SINGAPORE will lower the H1N1 pandemic alert level from orange to yellow next Monday. The change will ease some measures put in place since the nation went into orange alert last Thursday.

This event is significant to me as one of the measures that ceased concerns me, which is the temperature-taking excercise in schools. This event has a definite impact on Singaporeans as with the easing of measures, Singaporeans might deal with the H1N1 pandemic less seriously. This will actually put Singapore at huge risk as there is still a possible outbreak that is even greater.

I feel that lowering the alert will only have more negative impacts on us. As we have reduce our efforts of precautions against H1N1 virus, and it could expose us to H1N1 virus even more. The precautions cease were actually quite easy to be carried out and not time-consuming and thus I do not see any reasons why the precautions should be cease. We should not regret our decision only when there is a outbreak of the first case of H1N1 virus in Singapore, which will be too much a cost to us.

Unhappy about USA's continuing hostile policy towards them, North Korea vowed that it would strengthen its nuclear deterrent. Previously North Korea had already announced that they were quitting the six-party nuclear disarmament talks and restarted a programme to make weapons-grade plutonium.

This is seen as a threat to world peace as nuclear weapons are highly destructive, as seen from the world war II. With USA and Russia starting to go not build up their nuclear base so fast, the only nuclear threat remaining in the world is perhaps north korea.

I think that it maybe time for the neighbouring countries to come up with a "hard" approach instead of continue using the soft approach. It may even give North Korea more time to prepare for a nuclear war if they want to have one. Furthermore, it is rumoured that the north korea leader is stepping down from power soon, so he might have some big plans to execute on before he step down.

As for my stand, I think United Nation need to come up with a concrete plan as soon as possible before disater strikes.

According to NYtimes, Iraq's security force is still hobbled by shortages of men and equipment as well as corruption. However, Obama has not reverse the plan to withdraw combat forces from Iraq’s cities by the end of June and from the country by August 2010.

This event is significant as it implies that the Iraqi security forces are not ready to maintain law and order in the country. A disabled, crutch-bound US army veteran, Army Maj. Phil Packer plans to complete the London Marathon, despite being the last one to do so; the other competitors had finished the race 13 days earlier. The marathon is only the second part of his project, which involves taking on three challenges for charity. The idea to do this came to him while he spent over four months in a hospital last year following a serious injury in Iraq.

I find the event an important reminder of the strength of human willpower. Even when he knew he would be the last man running the race, Mr. Packer did not step aside and ask "what's the point?". Winning is not always getting to the finish first, but getting to the finish at all. The story strikes me as a example of how we should find the initiative to pick ourselves up after a fall, regardless of the support (or lack of support) from others. Mr Packer was told that he would probably never walk again. Perhaps what is most impressive is that this man did not seek to complete his three challenges to show himself he could do it, but to send a message of encouragement to other wounded personnel.

It would be a great benefit to society to see more people of such character. The stresses of everyday life often bring us to resting and complaining too quickly, and resilient behaviour is what will bring our workforce, our students, and most importantly our.. GDP.. to greater heights. Ahem.

  38. The event that I am going to review on is that regarding the arrest of Mas Selamat, which is from channel news asia.

It is said here that in a joint operation between Malaysia Special Branch(MSB) and the Internal Security Department(ISD), Mas Selamat has been arrested. However, his arrest does not mean that Singapore is safe. Instead we should remain vigilant, as the terror threat is real and Singapore is a prime target. Furthermore, there are also other JI members who have not been detained.

I chose to discuss this event as it is significant to me personally, as well as have an impact on my family and community. Being situated in Singapore, I should always be aware of what is happening within the country. Furthermore, Mas Selamat has been seen as a dangerous character as he committed several crimes, such as attempting to bomb Singapore's Changi air port and many more. Furthermore, there is a group of many other members from the JI supporting him. This goes to show that his arrest may pose a threat to Singaporeans as the other JI members may then be angry with Singapore and carry out attacks on Singapore. This will then affect the lives of Singaporeans. In the long run, it may even lead to social and political unstability within the country. When this happens, Singapore will suffer greatly, and will also lose its stand in the world.
With regard to this event, I am elated, but, at the same time, I agree with the deputy Prime Minister that we must remain vigilant and be always on our guard. I am elated as the arrest of Mas Selamat will ease many Singaporeans minds amidst this global recession. Furthermore, this will also remove doubts that the people may have on the Singapore government befoe his arrest, such as their incapability. This is very important as only a harmonious relationship between the people and the government will lead to further growth of Singapore's economy. As stated above, the other JI members pose a threat to all Singaporeans, in addition Mas Selamat may escape again with more 'creative ideas'. Hence, it is essential that we remain alert.

    “186k homeless from flood”

More than 186,000 became homeless and at least 19 people were killed by the floods and mudslides from months of heavy rains in Northern Brazil. This event also caused malfunction to the mining industry in Brazil. To resolve the problems, Brazilian President distributed food baskets and shelters to the people and promised aid to repair the infrastructure.

This event had brought destructions to the people in Northern Brazil. Because of floods and mudslides, six major highways had been swamped and cut off the transportation of thousands of people. Therefore, it caused inconvenience to the people as they have to move around the city with difficult ways. Since the houses were destroyed by floods, it will take a great cost and time to rebuild their houses. Brazil was affected badly in economic as the factories and people are not able to function properly. All in all, I think disasters only brought destructions to the people.

I think we have been facing with natural disasters such as floods, droughts, storms, earthquakes, etc frequently. I believe such extreme climate changes are caused by global warming. Therefore, I think everyone should be prepared for any emergency situations in the future as I believe more disasters are to come. Fortunately, with advanced technology and science, we are able to forecast and predicts when and where the natural disasters will happen. I think the country has to be economically and politically strong to recover faster from the damages brought by disasters. As disasters are unavoidable, we have to be fully prepared when it strikes.

  41. Singapore's JI leader Mas Selamat arrested in Malaysia

Mas Selamat Kastari, Singapore's Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leader who escaped from Whitley Road Detention Centre on February 27 last year, has been arrested. Mas Selamat was actually arrested over a month ago but had been under interrogation in Malaysia, and the news was announced only after Singapore and Malaysian governments confirm his arrest.

This news is significant as the escape of Mas Selamat last year sparked the largest manhunt in Singapore's history. With Mas Selamat arrest, it means that the society has become relatively safer.

Mas Selamat arrest was an absolute relieve, not just for Singaporeans, but for everyone around the world since terrorist attacks is random and any country is vulnerable to them. The Malaysian Special Branch (MSB) and the Internal Security Department of Singapore (ISD) have made a commendable effort in capturing him so efficiently, as the longer he remains elusive means the more chance we are giving him to inflict damages on the society.

I have read from that JI is a group that's constantly growing, constantly recruiting new members. Therefore, even with this arrest, Singaporeans must maintain vigilance, as the threat from JI group prevails. However, JI is not the only terrorist group in the world. It is especially important for everyone to come together to fight against such any terrorist threat, and as from this arrest, we can see that every country must work closely, exchange intelligence so that the global security is better assured.

  42. The event that I am going to write about is the outbreak of the swine flu. It is an epidemic of a new Influenza, a H1N1 strain of flu virus that was clinically identified in April 2009. It is currently a Phase 5 outbreak, one level below an official pandemic. The first outbreak of swine flu occurred in Mexico, which then rapidly spread to the United State, France, New Zealand, Canada and Britain. There are already 809 confirmed cases worldwide with 19 deaths confirmed in Mexico and 1 in US.
This is significant as this virus is usually very unpredictable and very deceptive. It was more dangerous than the Sars as while the Sars victims will show symptoms after contracting the virus, the swine flu H1N1 virus attacks silently. Most of the victims do not even show any flu symptoms, such as sneezing or a high temperature. In addition, the virus can also be spread from one person to another. Victims can be infected even without having direct contact with pigs.
In my opinion, I think that even though there is still no any confirmed cases in Singapore, precautionary measures have already been implemented to keep Singapore safe away from the virus. Thus, even though the flu is reported to be stabilized and under controlled, I hoped that Singapore can still continue to be vigilant and remain alert.

Singaporeans should not let their guard down even after Singapore's Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leader Mas Selamat was caught. Singapore is a prime target of terrorists, it is also porous due to its long coastline so people and goods can be easily brought in or even leave Singapore. Singapore cannot assume by the arrest of Mas Selamat alone will ensure the safety of Singapore from future terrorists attacks.

The significance is that although Mas Selamat was caught, there are still other terrorists out there unknown to us. The arrest of their leader can spark up their will to fight, they will try to take revenge for their leader, being more dangerous than before.

Singaporeans should not let their guard down on terrorism no matter what. War against terrorism is a long one, Singaporeans should always be vigilant, especially after the arrest of a terrorist leader.

This article is basically about Mexico being hit badly by the recent H1N1 flu outbreak, especially on her tourism industry, which is the main source of income. The article also discussed about the country's plans on reving her tourism industry. For example, tax breaks, discounts etc.

To me, this article is significant as it would be very interesting for a developing country like Mexico, which relies heavily on tourism industry, bounce back from this major blip. I am also curious as to how is she going to change public stereotype that Mexico is very unsafe, poor cleanliness, which brought about the flu outbreak.

I agree that the Mexican government should provide a $2.1billion in tax breaks and loans to revie the economy as the nation is badly hit by the outbreak, many people around the world stopped flocking into Mexico, causing the economy to be badly hit (no income, only expenditure). Hopefully, this will kickstart the economy and revive the country to its former glory.

I too, agree with AM resorts by giving three free vacations over the next three years to any customer unfortunate enough to pick up the H1N1 flu virus at one of its Mexico resorts and also offering discounts of 37 to 55 percent, as well as credits worth as much as $250 for food and other items. Although this is like a band-aid to a gunshot wound, at least it shows that action is being done to rectify the situation, to bring people back.

What Mexico should also do is to conduct a mass cleanup campaign of the country and maintain its cleanliness. This is to generate an image of Mexico being clean and hygienic. This will definitely give assurance to people who are unsure about Mexico. If all goes well, this could be added as a weapon in its arsenal, in addition to the vibrant Mexican culture.-Hioe William 0919

This article writes about the actions taken by other countries in face of the recent outbreak of the H1N1 virus. In all countries including those in Asia, foreigners and tourists from infected countries have been quarantine for days and tests were taken to look out for signs of swine flu to prevent further dissemination of the virus.
From researches, it was found that this new strain of virus derived from the reassortment of genes. It originated from Mexico and has spread to Asia in the shortest period of time. From the past experience of H5N1 virus, this new outbreak has certainly gripped the world’s notion. I have chosen to write about this report as I think that it has reflected on how well we are prepared for the future challenges that we might face, and this is very important to not only us, Singaporeans, but also to people from all around the world, to keep track of things happening around us and to take a caution approach on things at all times.
Reading between the lines, I realize that after the incidence of SARS and the avian flu that swept through Asia, we are definitely prepared to counter the swine flu, with the temperature-taking exercises, quarantines and detailed checkups at the airports. It is comforting to know that we had taken precaution. As unfortunate as it is, there will definitely be new virus arising in future and we might not be able to find cure in time. As the saying goes “prevention is better than cure”, applying the lessons we had learnt now might be a good practice for the future.
However, as the article has written, many governments realized that the virus is milder than they feared and they decided to slacken their measures taken against swine flu. This is not the best option as the occurrence of virus is unpredictable and dangerous. Hence we should be alert at all times until the H1N1-wave is finally over. Miaoxian(0919)

This article caught my eye among many others, especially since it is not about the H1N1 virus or bombings in a foreign country. It is about a boy in a Christian school in Ohio expecting to be suspended for simply attending a public school's prom with his girlfriend.

Indeed, this event has no major significance on the World, the community as a whole or even a country on the superficial level. However, this article is one that relates back to an age-old topic that stirs much controversy, change. With globalisation so prominent in this 21st century, the word 'change' has ever so often, crept into our lives. What was socially unacceptable previously, is now a norm in society.

Finally, there comes an article which proves to us, not everything has changed. The Christian school the boy attends forbids dancing, rock music and hand holding, things that have already integrated into society. For just attending a prom, he might be suspended from school and prohibited from attending Graduation, with school officials adding that he could complete his final exams separately to receive a diploma. All this just for attending a simple public school prom with his Girlfriend.

My stand here is not against the entire value system the Christian school holds, for many values are definitely still relevant in today's society. Though it is perfectly fine for the school to not follow the status quo and not entirely the school's fault in this case (The rules was, of course, set before the boy had chosen to go for prom), and though the boy's stepfather argued that school rules do not apply outside of school, there still leaves the overall question that has nothing to do with details.

I personally do not stand for any side in this case, but would like to bring this to a broader level, to this question: must change occur for something to be socially acceptable? I believe not, but at times, change is definitely required.

This article raised an issue that happened around a year ago. The escape of a highly wanted JI terrorist, which highlights the complacency of Singapore's security force and the danger of terrorism.

Mas Selamat Kastari was able to escape from the Whitley Road Detention Center through a small window from the male toilet cubicle. This highlights the lack of vigilance shown by the guards that stood outside. Mas Selamat had did the same escape scenario before in Indonesia, where he had broke his leg then. The failed attempt should have been taken into account and pre-empted an escape like this.

Coming back to the story, the re-capture of Mas Selamat indeed brought about relief to many Singaporeans. Singapore is very dependent on its reputation and security for its import and export business as a local harbour. Hence, the re-capture of Mas Selamat brought back regained confidence from countries all over the world. Also, it shows the close cooperation Singapore and Malaysia shares as Malaysian government played a major role in the re-capture.

In my opinion, I'm just slightly relieved that our country has one less skilled bomber to fear of and we can finally stop seeing the poster all over the lamp pole.

Singaporeans should never let their guard down even after Singapore's Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leader Mas Selamat was caught. Singapore is a attractive target of terrorists, it is because of its importance as a regional hub in Asia and its diplomatic ties with many western countries.

Catching Mas Selemat was not an end to the effort put in to protect singapore from terrorist threats. The fact that he even escaped shows us that we have not done enough in our nations security.

The significance of Mas Selamat being caught is that we have shown that we are competent and able to keep up with new threats, but there are still other terrorists out there looming in the dark unknown to us. Mas selemat is a mere cell in the entire terrorist network so we must be prepared for a long fight.

This article is linked to the recent turmoil of the swine flu cases. It states that 4 people are under quarantine and only one is left serving the quarantine at home while the other three are serving the HQOs (Home Quarantine Orders) at home. There have been a total of fifteen people serving the order so far.

This reminds us of the 2003 SARS outbreak in which many were infected as they were unprepared for the disaster. To avoid the same history from repeating, the government is more vigilant in dealing with the swine flu this time round, by conducting regular temperature taking in schools and the workforce. This can help to keep track of the number people who may be infected with the disease and appropriate actions could be taken. This way of handling the problem is apt and deserves support from the community as it helps to chase the harmful disease away.

Therefore, it is important to take the necessary precautions to alleviate the problem. The Home Quarantine Orders helps to prevent the spread of the disease. I'm glad to know that precautions are taken to such an extent, and our government is indeed very competent in handling such affairs after learning a lesson from the previous SARS outbreak.

  50. The article is about the escape of the JI leader Mas selamat. This article caught my eye as i did not expect Singapore's criminal to be able to escape.

Through this event, it showed the level of complaceny that the guards had. Its also gave Singapore a negative image as Singapore is thought to be one of the places with the tightest security. The search for Mas Selamat also affected our lives as there was a largest manhunt in Singapore history. Posters were put up at every neighbourhood and Singaporeans were contsantly on the look out for the most wanted man in Singapore.

The re-capture of Mas Selamat brought back some reputation for Singapore as it is important for Singapore to maintain a good diplomatic position. The re-caputure also made Singapore a safer place again.

Although this event showed the negligience of the Singapore prison guards, it served as a good lesson learnt. We should not be complacent even if there is peace and stability in the country. We should be vigilant and be alert at all times so as to counter terrorism effectively. However, this event also showed that Singapore government has the ability to react to emergencies and resolve the problem. Although peace is restored again, we should still be prepared for a long fight aganist terrorism.

This article is about the conflict between the pig industries farm and the locals which led to a protests. The increase in pig industries has threaten public health and the safety of the locals.
I chose this article as it shows the negative impact of globalisation on the locals. The overpowering stenach given of from the pig industries gave them headaches and sometimes to the extent that they have to leave their house. Even though sometimes making more mony for the countries is important and that more investments is important, the voice of the people is more important than economic growth and that they should reach a compromise with the people. That is why the voice of the people is important or there will be conflict and protest that might affect economic growtn and disrupt life.
My stand is on neither side but that the government should not decide everything on their own they should also considered the what the people has to say and their concerns and public health and safety of the people. The government should not only think about economic gains. The local communities should also compromise with the officials. Actually most of these problems are cause by globalisation.

I had my attention on this article as it discusses the importance of prevention, preparedness in the fight against the H1N1 outbreak. Singapore has raised its awareness and alertness on the pandemic, and almost immediately went on orange alert after the first case of outbreak. Regular temperature checks were conducted at air, land and sea check points, as well as in schools. Infection control measures at healthcare institutions were also stepped up.
Although Singapore has currently no cases of H1N1, but it may be possible in future that a case of infection happens. Therefore, being mentally and physically prepared for the outbreak is very crucial as being only a small country, the pandemic can tear us down easily. The website provides regular updates on the changes of the situation and the various measures taken by the government, thus keeping readers reported on the current situation.
However, beside governmental effort in the prevention, I believe that every one of us has to do our least part in maintaining high standards of personal hygiene. A simple act of washing your hand frequently with soap and water can make a huge difference. So let us all take basic precautionary measures such as avoiding crowded areas and maintaining high standards of personal hygiene at all times to keep the pandemic far away as possible!

Ever since the new flu virus,H1N1 hits America last month. Countries all over the world has decided to take full precautions. When Singapore heard of the case, our country immediately went into orange alert. It was only until a few days ago when the government has finally lowered it to yellow. The government has even stated that even if there is only one person with the flu, it will still remain at yellow alert. Hence, this proves that our government is ready and vigilant to tackle such problem again just like what happened during the SARS period.

The H1N1 flu virus has claimed hundreds of lives and affected 5,000 people over the world. This case has struck Mexico and the United States unaware of the disease which led to lives lost. This shows that they are unprepared for such thing to happen as it was uncalled for. Unlike Asia, ever since the SARS incident in 2006 where many lives were lost, countries like China, Singapore and Malaysia are all ready to handle such cases if one of their people is down with the flu in their country. Hence, this proves that we are ready to handle such cases before more lives are lost.

I would truly hope that Mexicoo and the United States have learn a valuable lesson as on when to be aware of an emergency. The good thing is that the people are quick enough to response to the pandemic, if not there will be more deaths. Hopefully, the flu virus will be gone soon and no longer taking more lives.

This article says that Singapore will stay on yellow alert even if confirmed H1N1 cases surface. I agree with this statement as he fatality rate associated with the H1N1 virus is currently very low and there is a possibility it may simply become one of the normal influenza strains. Thus there is no need for us to make a fuss out of it and let it affect our daily lives.

However, it is still important for us to be hygienic and to always be on our toes. It is just like the Sars period. We do not know when the virus will appear in Singapore and so we shall learn our lesson from last time and prevent that from happening.

It is also a shared responsibility between the government and the people to help the country stay free from H1N1. This is because, with the whole country working as a unit, i believe that we can effectively prevent H1N1 from invading Singapore.

This article shows that Singapore is still not in the danger zone of the recent H1N1 case. Although we should not make a big fuss, for example, having the whole school quarantined when one student got infected, we should never be complacent and should continue our preventive measures.

I chose this article as for the upcoming june holidays, a group of students, including me, will be going Japan for some cultural exchange programme. Hence, the outbreak of H1N1 cases might cause the trip to Japan to be cancelled. So far, the trip has yet been cancelled.

Im glad that Singapore has done a good job in managing an epidemic like this. Her efficiency in having all the preventive measures will be rewarded with a healthy Singapore with probably only a few cases of H1N1, as stated in the article that it is inevitable a case would surface here.

Swine flu,or the H1N1 virus, has great impact on us. Since the outbreak of H1N1 virus, Singapore had taken numerous precaution and ensure that the virus will not spread to s'pore.
Having the expreience from SARS virus, S'pore is able to prepare herself for such outbreaks.
However, this time, the H1N1 virus is different from SARS as full spectrum of clinical illness and how it will affect the people is still unknown.

The outlook for the tourism and travel
sector in the major markets like S'pore still remains uncertain.
As stated in the article, there's has been a significant decrease in the volume of travel to n fro s'pore, both for business and leisure.
This article actually shows how much s'pore is affected ny the recent outbreak of the H1N1 virus.

I think that the drop is not only due to the outbreak of virus but also partly due to economic recession. In my opinion,S'pore economy is not goin to be affected on a large scale, but only to a certain extent.
It is obvious that some people will be afraid and not dare to take the risk and do not travel for the time being. However, due to business purposes, it's necessary for them to travel.
Thus, the demand for travel will only dip a little.

I feel that to play safe, it is not advisable for people to travel to other countries even though the destination is not an infected area.

The article I am summarizing on is the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In a nutshell, this regions are in conflict over the Nagorny Karabakh region. Nearly 30,000 have been killed and 2 million had to flee their homes since the ceasefire 15 years ago.

The threat of a new war is affecting attempts to diversify European energy supplies and threaten to derail efforts to reconcile Armenia and Turkey. This is very devastating as this would not just affect conflicting countries but other countries not involved.

I feel that the prospect of a possible war should have more attention from more neutral countries to attempt to resolve the conflict. Governments involved in the conflict should also consider the fact that war does not bring any good to a country, even if they manage to attain the land.

  59. Mas Selamat Kastari had eluded the Singaporean Police Force/Military for 13months, until the beggining of April. He had apparently swum to Johor and resided in the secluded village of Kampung Tawakal. A 30-minute standoff had preceeded the arrest of Mas Selamat from the kampung house.

I believe this event, to a certain extent, signifies the effectiveness of cooperative police networks, as displayed by those of Singapore and Malaysia. This event also brings one of the region's largest manhunt. I see this event as a side story of a newspaper with headlines 'H1N1 SWEEPING THE GLOBE'. It is true that in the midst of all the swine flu chaos, a little relieve goes a long way. But looking at the case itself, I would say that it brings the community and our society peace and stability, after more than a year's worth of panic.

To comclude, I would say that I am proud of our nation's police force for still being diligent even after a year of fruitless effort. The escape and capture of Mas Selamat would definitely register in Singapore's history books.

I feel that such law should not be approved even though considering that the world is much more open-minded now. It is because there are still many ppl who reject the idea of same-sex marriage hence disputes may occur. An example is in California.

Issues like this should be taken care of with careful delibration. Allowing same-sex marriages will definitely increase the number of gays and lesbians looming as the years past. Hence, i think that same-sex marriages should all be disallowed as law for all states and countries.

The article i will be reviewing on is about the US dependence on importing oil from oversreas.

This article is significant because of the many implications this dependence has on the USA, and thus affecting the rest of the world.
USA having to import oil from countries from the middle east such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and other countries such as Russia and Venezuela actually make these nations more powerful in the sense that they have a 'upper hand' in some decisions made by the USA, in terms of political and on the economy.
In terms of politics, if the US is able to wean itself off oil, thus being less dependent, export countries would be less able/likely to be able to fund militias and terrorist groups. For example, back in the 1990s, Saudi Arabia was able to fund extremist Islamic groups when oil was $20 a barrel.
This does impact the whole world in return as terrorists have wide networks around the world, create chaos and fear.

In terms of economy, a change in oil prices would affect the US economy due to its dependence on oil. USA, being the powerhouse in economy, would in return affects taxes, overseas trade, and probably even foreign exchange due to the currency.

If the USA could become more independant and start promoting and changing to alternate energy, not only can it spend less on energy, but also gain a more dominant and powerful status globally with lesser threats facing it.
Of course, some threats have to remain to constanly provide a check on the US in any case it becomes over powering.

still, no doubt more benefits would arise if the US was less dependent on oil, thus in turn benefiting the rest of the nations.

I will be reviewing on the article "Bank sees slow economic recovery" on BBC News (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8047593.stm).

In this article, the Bank of Engalnd (BoE), the united Kingdom's central bank, said that its economy is likely to experience a slow and delayed recovery from this economic storm. They expect the British economy to start showing signs of revival only in 2010, while preparing for a 4.5% drop in the nation's growth.

As we all know, this economic crisis, which started in 2007 and further aggreviated by Lehman Brothers' collapse in September last year, has caused the world economy to go into a slump.

The significance of this announcement would be that of Britain's influence as one of the world's largest economies. It would definitely have a rather significant impact on the financial markets in Europe.

Personally, it would affect me as markets in Europe would affect world markets, including those in Singapore, and would in turn affect me as an individual - should my parents' income be significantly affected, so could my pocket money and hence it spells me a different way of life.

I believe that it is good news that BoE is optimistic and willing to be transparent to its people and the world. Should all major financial institutions possess these qualities, coupled with great leadership and decision-making policies, this would ensure us getting out of this crisis in the most effective way possible.

EU slaps a record fine on intel

Computer Chipmaker, Intel, has been fined 1.06bn euros by the EU for anti-competitive practice. Intel, has been paying manufacturers and a retailer to favour its chips over others. Intel has announced that it would appeal against the verdict.

this heavy fine by the EU on Intel against anti- competitive practice can be seen as a severe warning to any other companies which wishes to carry out anti-competitive practice, to make use of its dominance in the market. This also serves as a message to all that the EU is strongly against any of such practices. Furthermore, since Intel is the dominant company in this market for microchips, when it is charged with such a huge fine, it is also to target towards other markets, showing that the EU, or any government for that matter, will not tolerate such acts, and would be impartial in passing down the verdict, despite the offender.
Hence, this shows that Intel being fined is a significant event.

The reason i chose this event, is that the IT industry is a major industry in Singapore's economy, and such an event would cause an implication to Singapore's economy. This event would only result in negative implications to Singapore's economy in the current economic crisis, as consumer's trust for Intel's goods would decrease.

I do not think that the EU should fine Intel so heavily. The fact that Intel is causing the manufacturers to be more favourable towards intel's chips over its competitors, has caused the use of the IT equipments to be much more convenient, as the public need only purchase Intel's chips and would be easily able to use it for most of the brand of personal computers.
The fact that Intel claims it causes zero harm to its consumers can be used to back up my stand, as in actual fact, it does not cause harm to consumer, but gives convenience to them.

The article shows that Singapore has been putting in effort to fortify the measures taken if the recent H1N1 breaks out again. Various new plans have been established to not only fend us from the recent outspread of H1N1 flu but also get us prepared for any other future diseases.

This gives the local people a better idea of the level of preparedness we have in dealing with such emergencies, and instilled more trust in Singaporeans for our government. The H1N1 flu would affect everyone around the globe. Indirectly, it would cause the downturn of our economy through various ways like the drastic drop in tourism. Directly, it would cause chaos in the health sectors, leading to deaths. It would definitely affect me as a student as much inconvenience would be caused due to the regular temperature takings and tightened security.

I feel that the establishment of the Flu Pandemic Response Plan is a great measure to deter global flues like the recent H1N1 flu. MOE had collaborated with our neighborhood clinics and they will play a key role if pandemic breaks out. Trained to deal with such situations, I believe these 800 primary healthcare providers will make medical support much more accessible for the local people.

The article is about the new cases that broke out in Britain. two of the patients live in London, while one lives in eastern England because the victims had come in contact with people who were confirmed to have had the virus. Thus causing the number of total cases of swine flu in britain to increase to 71.

The direct impact of the event could be that the number of total casualties of swine flu would rise, especially in Britian. although emergency level of the outbreak of swine flu had decreased from when it first surfaced, i feel that the problem does not lie with the number of causualties of the virus but rather the efficiency of various health sectors in the different countries. the new cases of swine flu in britain is an obvious example of the incapabilities of the Health Protection Agency in Britain. thus in the future, if there are any other outbreak of diseases in the country, the Health Protection Agency might not be able to deal with it effectively. Not only in Britain, but the whole world as a whole.

Therefore, i feel that Health measures ought to be stepped up even at a time where there are no outbreak of any viruses. I feel that it is the people's resposibility to constantly take note of their own hygiene. With a more healthy and hygienic environment, people would be ready to face any possible outbreak of diseases in the future should any arise.

  66. This article which i have chosen is regarding the creation of H1N1 viruses worldwide which could be transformed into Seed stock - another form of H1n1 virus which could be then turned into a vaccine for the swine flu.
such preparation would be beneficial to some extent because when we are able to create a vaccine for the swine flu, there will a immediate mass production of such vaccine which could be beneficial to people world wide but the concern would be that the virus mutates, then all the seed stocks would be rendered useless.
As such ,I feel that such production should take place but not at a large scale. Some labatories should be targeted on research on the virus itself ,therefore if the H1N1 mutates , we would be more prepared to tackle it.

I chose this article as it has direct relevance to our country and our soceity. As a citizen of Singapore, any terrorist attack would signicficantly affect us. With Mas Selamat plotting a terror attack on Singapore, it would mean that the lives of our families, friends and people are at stake. An attack would also affect our economy. With a successful terror attack, would reduce toursim and foreign investments to our country. Since Singapore is heavily dependent on our exports, imports and tourism industry for its survival, a reduction in these aspects of our economy would result in devastation to our country, community and country.

  70. Google's Street View service suffered a second blow this week after numerous complaints in Japan forced the firm to start reshooting all the photos.

Google has been the dominant search engine for many of us. This article highlights the strong anti-Google sentiment in many countries not just in Japan, but also in Greece and the United Kingdom. In my opinion, Google’s Street View is a big plus for many people around the world who may not have the time to travel or are too poor to do so. By providing services from digital books to street maps to being a news aggregator, I am sure that millions around the world have benefited in one way or another from its services. Although Google has added convenience to our lives, it is important to look into privacy issues carefully. Google survives through its advertising revenues. As the number 1 search engine, Google has been able to collate and analyse our search entries to provide targeted advertisements to its clients. This is a concern because what this means is that Google will be able to determine our habits over time and build up a portfolio of each and every one who uses its service. Isn't it creepy to have someone who can read what you think?

    The link is http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/05/13/tennessee.exonerated/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

This article talks about the the release of Paul House who spent 22 years on Tennessee death row for rape, murder. The man was released from prison and placed under house arrest after the U.S Supreme Court ruled that new DNA evidence could have led to a jury to acquit him.

This event is significant as it shows the advancement in technology that has brought about positive effects. The man was previously jailed for raping and murdering a neighbour. But now, due to the DNA testing, the accusation is questionable which leads to renewed faith in innocent victims that were wrongly accused. It can greatly boost public confidence in the police department and the juridical court as the verdicts given can also be further substantiated with DNA reports.
On top of that, DNA testings also help in identifying blood relations, which is an additional tool for many people.

We think that the article is meaningful as the release of the innocent man, who was imprisoned for 22 years, is finally able to gain freedom again and unite with his family. This also help to encourage other innocent victims who are wrongly imprisoned to remain positive and believe that there will be a chance for them to prove their innocence in time to come.

All in all, we feel that the creation of DNA testing has been a great advantage to all mankind.

I chose this article as in this difficult times, this opening of a shopping centre really highlighted how bad is the unemployment rate and how badly thousands of people need the jobs. This will have a great impact on our economy when more people are employed through such ingenious job creations.

This is information and knowledge is significant to me as i'll learn to treasure what i have now and control my expenditure as people will get poorer when they are unemployed; like those 5000 applicants for the job. If they have no worries about money in their daily lives, they would not even need to seek for jobs.

My stand about this article is that i believe the government should let our singaporean citizens be the priorities to be shortlisted for those jobs available in ION Orchard. This is to limit foriegners from competing with us for such a meagre "rice bowl". But otherwise, its a brillant period of time to open the mall and recruit the jobless left behind by the failing economy.

  75. The article on channelnewsasia titled "Singapore's all-women team successfully summit Mt Everest" comments on the achievement of this group of women who took on Mount Everest and conquered it. The team had been training hard and started their plans 5 years ago. They are now the first women in Singapore to have ever conquered this enormous feat.

I would like to say that this article encourages women to be more determine in everything they want to achieve as the saying goes, "if women can overcome difficult obstacles just as men can, then why let them have all the glory for themselves?". This statement has both its positive and negative sides for each gender groups.

It is true that women nowadays are more capable of doing more than just bringing up children and doing the housework. They are more career minded and competitive when it comes to work which requires more thinking. This article's positive impact is that it gives women credit for accomplishing this difficult feat thus, encourages them to believe in themselves and strive to excel in their life. This will increase more number of women in the workforce with a more competitive and determined mindset. This will help the boost economy in Singapore and increase our national income.

However, on the downside, when more women turn to the workforce, thinking that they are able to do anything thats thrown at them and do it better than men if given the chance, then the number of available job opportunities for the rest of the population drops. The government will have to allocate more jobs for the women or many are going to be unemployed. In addition, who will look after the house and family? Assuming that most women stay at home for longer hours before this article is posted. This will also affect population growth if women always stay in the office or are busy somewhere making money.

Besides that, not only women are competitive nowadays. This mindset of being tough and competitive is being instilled in young female adults as well. More women are going into universities and getting a degree. This will affect future employment for the country and is a problem worth planning for today, in time to come.

I believe that sometimes even though when one knows that one can do exactly something another can do, it is not necessarily better that one must replace the other as both outcomes will still be the same. My point is that men should still ultimately be the majority in the workforce because when it comes down to bearing a huge and heavy responsibility, I believe that men can handle it much better than women can. For example, when AIG collapsed, it was men who came up with solutions to the problem and discussed what was the best plan of action to pull it back up again.

In conclusion, this article will given women more strength to believe in themselves but to what extent will their new found determination take them?
